Dada is a modern movement which influence graphic design. Graphic design in dada movement were almost satire and with their posters and artwork they wanted to communicate and deliver a massage to the society.
Dada name was formed by slipping a piece of paper into a french dictionary where it stopped on the word dada, dada also means hobbyhorse or a child’s toy.Dada movement had only one rule which was never follow any known rules. Many of the artists were politicians because they wanted to change the mentality of the society by creating satire and controversy posters to deliver their message. Photomontage was one of the most popular mediums during dada movement. Typography was also important with elongated text overlapping other photos, pictures and collages.
This movement was originated in Switzerland and then it was spread all over the world including Europe and United state. Although dada was a movement the dadaists were not happy to call it as a movement. During the dada period dadaist wrote and designed several protest material to protest their thoughts in the society.
Dada movement had different approach in several things such as typography, photomontage,negative space, letter and line spacing and these were very important for a better communication. Dada wanted to communicate with people by typography, they wanted that the readers look at the shape of typeface in it’s explosive layout. Dada also used different typefaces of different sizes.
Photomontages featured cuttings of pictures and photos and type from different magazines posters and other media and it was used to give different meaning.Photomontage also are made from negative combinations and multiple exposures.Photomontages featured a crude approach, aggressive approach, no artistic techniques, fragments of images and text from popular culture and meanings subverted by juxtaposition of images. Photomontages lead for the creation of photo manipulation in which is very popular in todays life by using the software photoshop.
