Photo montage is the process of cutting photos, pictures and scenes and joining them together in one photograph. This technique started after the world war 1 but photographic manipulation started in the 19th century after the innovation of photography.
Int the 19th Century (Victorian Era) experimented with direct contact printing of objects placed on photographic plates, composite pictures made by darkroom masking double exposures were to be very popular.
During this period the victorians were very interested by this idea of photos with head stuck on different bodys. After the first world war artists began to use photomontage which was originated first in Berlin by the group Dada who proved to express a new style of art.
Dada montages were used as covers of magazines and manifestos of the movement. Mostly their designs were of the dada artist with random newspaper text.
In the 1980s europe began to use the photo montage by creating banners for demonstrations. These banners were very powerful to communicate with people . At first these were used by the politics of the anti-nuclear movement.
Photo montage can be made by different mediums such as, newspapers, magazines, flyers, photographs, tickets and other material. In todays life photomontage is made digital by photoshop. Artists can create photomontage by different online picture and photos but now photomontage has expanded and includes text, sound and digital montage.
