Constructivism
The word constructivism first appeared in Aleksei Gan book for his book title that was printed in 1922. The constructivism began after the world war 1. Constructivism was a modern art movement of the 20th century. Constructivism was influencing Bauhaus and De Stijl movements. The influences includes graphic design, industrial design, theatre, fashion and many other. There were many artist which worked on these aspects such as El Lissitzky, Solomon Telingater and Anton Lavinsky. These artist work on several graphic design posters which includes political propaganda , cinema and photomontage.
El Lissitzky
El Lissitzky born in 1890 and he was a Russian artist. He studied in different countries including Germany, France and Italy then he graduated in Moscow where he gained his degree in engineer- architect. After graduated El Lissitzky worked on different works of architectural in Moscow and st. Petersburg. After several years he began working more on graphic design were he focused more on book design. El Lissitzky was a teacher of graphics, art, printing and architecture and in 1919 he was appointed head of architectural at the Vitebsk Art Institute.
He also was a designer, typographer and photographer. He worked on several propaganda such as poster, books, buildings and many other stuff. His works with the name proun that means "project for the affirmation of the new”, his work features abstract geometric shapes such as squares, circle and triangle.
His most famous work was “beat the whites with the red wedge” The whites with the red wedge represent the Russian Civil War which he created this art to support the red army. Other important work from Lissitzky were Had Gadya in 1919 that represent a song by the jewish families, Proun 99 in 1925 which Lissitzky created tension between the open, negative and three- dimensional space and flat and many other political posters such as the Russische Ausstellung in 1929 which represents the equality of sex in the communist.
El Lissitzky passed away in December 30, 1941 but his work is still very influential as his work was very simple and abstract. Beginner artist who have the interest to study art and graphic design will begin by learning how to design basic concepts such as the geometric shapes and also the primary colours which lissitzky used in majority of his work
In todays era Lissitsky work is very influential as many designers are working with the geometric shapes. One can see his work in several things such as magazines, posters, business cards, web design and many others.
